The IAHA Leadership Program has been designed to promote a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, cultural governance, advocacy, influencing others, community development and Nation building approaches. Guided by Indigenous ways of working, including knowing, being and doing, the program develops the attributes and skills to become an effective, culturally responsive Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander leader. The program creates opportunities and a willingness for participants to confidently step forward with the knowledge and self-belief to address the multi-faceted challenges that leadership roles can present.

The program engages IAHA members in conversations and culturally centred concepts with experiential leadership activities with the following five intended learning and development outcomes:

1. Strengthen understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership from a dual cultural and professional perspective
2. Develop personal leadership philosophy, leadership goals, aspirations and how to achieve and implement them
3. Apply key concepts and learnings to interpersonal and professional relationships
4. Develop supportive and effective peer networks
5. Strengthen skills and experiences of leadership in practice.

Participants complete elements of the program over a period of 9-month period which is designed to reinforce their knowledge and put it into practice. The program is completed through five stages:

Stage 1. Online training in cultural responsiveness and cultural responsiveness in mentoring
Stage 2. Two and half-day face-to-face intensive

20 – 24 July

Stage 3. Minimum of six online professional development webinars (interactive and pre-recorded on topics including community development, advocacy, working with and in government, and Indigenous nation building)
Stage 4. Completion of a Leadership Project of the individual’s choice (group or individual)
Stage 5. One day face to face program completion aligning with the IAHA National Conference

The 2026 IAHA Leadership Program is a 9-month course commencing February 2026 through to November 2026. During the program you will be expected to take approximately 120 hours across the 9 months. On average this is approximately 2 - 3 hours per week.

Notice to Associate Members:

IAHA Leadership Program is funded entirely from funds raised by IAHA to sponsor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals to commence their Leadership journey. IAHA does not receive any outside or Government funding to support this program. Please note that applications from IAHA Full Graduate and Full Workforce Assistant (Graduate) members will be prioritised.
