The Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) National Study Grant Scheme (ACANSS) is available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who are studying a chiropractic course at an Australian University. Full-time study grant awardees will receive up to $10,000 per year and part-time recipients will receive up to $5,000 per year. The funding is paid in instalments throughout the study period of the year.

It is an ACA initiative designed to encourage and assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in chiropractic to complete their studies and join the health workforce. ACA has a strong relationship with Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA), the national not-for-profit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander allied health organisation, who will be a key partner in the selection and support of the successful candidate.

The program is a cooperative program between Australian Rotary Health, Rotary clubs, some State or Territory Governments and the Commonwealth Government.

The value of each scholarship is $5,000 per year. A Rotary Club contributes $2,500 per year and the State or Commonwealth Government provides a similar amount. The Commonwealth Government also provides funding for the administration of the program within the Australian Rotary Health office.

Nano Nagle Scholarship

Established by the Presentation Sisters, Queensland Congregation, to commemorate and honour the work of their founder Nano Nagle. Members of the Order have become aware of the injustices perpetrated against the traditional owners of the land and therefore have begun to be involved in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reconciliation process and to appreciate, and learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander spirituality, culture and history. The Deeble Institute of Health Policy Research is offering six-week scholarships for postgraduate tertiary students. The scholarship is based in Canberra and is designed to support talented students to produce an Issues Brief on important national health services or health policy topic. The purpose of the Summer Research Scholarship program is to provide post-graduate students with an opportunity to work in a knowledge exchange organisation so that they gain a better understanding of how to make academic research relevant to policymakers and practitioners. The program also provides an opportunity for scholars to experience what it is like to work in a peak national health body and to establish connections with policymakers and practitioners working in their field of research.

Successful applicants will receive:

• an honorarium of $1,800 payable as a one-off amount at the conclusion of the six-week placement, subject to completion of expected outcomes
• the opportunity to gain training and work experience in a health policy knowledge translation organisation
• the opportunity to participate in the broader work of the AHHA and Deeble Institute, which may include meetings with senior policymakers, health services providers and academics, visits to government departments, and Policy Think Tanks

In order for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities to be adequately met by pharmacists, there is a need for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pharmacists to work in the industry. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme aims to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at university.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme, applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent enrolled, or about to be enrolled, as a full-time student in a pharmacy undergraduate or graduate degree at an Australian university. Scholarships are available to students in any year of their undergraduate or graduate degree.

The student must also be a member of the student Rural Health Club or a member of their university’s affiliated Rural Health Club. Proof of membership is required prior to receiving scholarship payments.

Although not a mandatory requirement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who currently live, or have lived, in a rural or remote community will be preferred for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme.

Payments

A total of 3 scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum for a maximum of four years are offered annually. Study at honours level beyond the length of an undergraduate course is not covered by the scholarship.

Funds are paid by the Guild in monthly instalments via direct Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).

Gayle Woodford Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is jointly sponsored by CRANAplus and the Centre for Remote Health.

The scholarship covers all course fees for the Graduate Certificate in Remote Health Practice, offered through Flinders University.

One scholarship will be awarded annually, for study to commence the following year.

Tenure

The scholarship will continue for the duration of the Graduate Certificate in Remote Health Practice. The usual part time study period is 12 months, however recipients may be allowed up to 2 years to complete their course.

Inability to complete the study may incur a financial penalty

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship is open to registered nurses, Indigenous health practitioners, allied health practitioners and medical officers.

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Remote Health Practice:

• hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution in a health related field.
• the Nursing stream must have a minimum of one year post-registration experience and must be currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse with no restrictions on practice.
• the Medical stream must be either concurrently enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine at Flinders University or currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Medical Practitioner.

The Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Working in remote practice is desirable.

Australian Hearing will be offering three Masters of Audiology scholarships annually to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university graduates at several Australian universities from 2018.

The scholarships have been established to invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university graduates to consider following a career pathway into Audiology.

Hearing health disorders are over-represented in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. While there are many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers who specialise in hearing health, there are currently few Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiologists.

The scholarships are offered at Macquarie University in NSW, the University of Queensland, and Flinders University in South Australia. Each scholarship is valued at $15,000 over the two-year period of study. This includes joining a remote Australian Hearing Outreach trip in year two, valued at $3,000.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are accepted into the course at each of these Universities may then apply for a Scholarship. Successful applicants will be required to satisfy their university’s ongoing enrolment requirements.

The scholarships offer financial assistance to support undergraduate students who are interested in working remotely, giving them the opportunity to experience a remote health setting first hand. About The Scholarships

Each year CRANAplus offers a number of scholarships. These scholarships provide financial assistance of up to $1000 per applicant, per remote placement. They can be applied to the cost of fares, accommodation and other incidental costs incurred by a student undertaking an undergraduate placement in a remote area of Australia and its external Territories.

Round One for placements from 1 January – 30 June each year- Applications open 1 Feb and close 31 May

Round Two for placements 1 July – 31 December. Applications open 1 July and Close 30 October.
